Upper Owens River:
- Water flow is 127 CFS.
- Same old story. Fishing here is slow and fish are hard to come by.
- Nymph fishing is the way to go.
- Caddis Larva, Midge Pupa and small Hares Ears.
Lower Owens River: Water flow is 113 CFS.
- Flow has increased a bit and fishing remains good.
- Some pretty good dry fly action during a mid-day May Fly hatch recently.
- Best results during the mid day hours (11:00 am - 1:00 pm)
PYRAMID LAKE, NEV:
Valerie at Crosby's Lodge (775-476-0400) reported:
- So far today (Monday), we have weighed in a 10-pounder and a 9-pounder. The 10-pounder was caught at "The Nets" and the 9-pounder was caught at the Marina, both on flies.
- Last week, Lee Leighton of Reno caught a 13-pound, 14-ounce Cutt at Spider Point with a silver Flatfish lure from a boat.
- We also checked in two 10-pounders and one 5-pounder, last week.
PYRAMID LAKE, NEV:
George and Carla Molino of the Pyramid Lake Store (775-476-0555) reported:
- Not much to tell you. The weather is not helping. When they can get out in the boats, they are doing well, but nothing of any size.
PRYAMID LAKE, NEV:
The Reno Fly Shop in Reno (775-825-FISH) reported:
- Fish in the 10 to 15 pound class have been a common sighting for those putting in their time. The fish seem to be hanging in a little deeper water but at some point during the day a school of big fish will show themselves for a couple of passes in the shallows.
- Reports have been ranging from 1 to 10 fish a day.
- Beaches with access to deeper water have been the best places to try.
- North Nets, Wino, Block House, Sand Hole, Monument and Howard's have all been worth fishing as of late.
- Most anglers are catching the bigger fish on big, dark colored Woolly Buggers like the Midnight Cowboy or the Bloody Mary in size 2 or 4. Useful droppers include pink and white beetles, Chartreuse tadpoles and smaller white Woolly Buggers.
RED LAKE, CALIF:
Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930) reported:
- Two guys limited out on Sunday, nothing big.
- They were ice fishing with mealworms or jigging Kastmaster lures.
SAN JOAQUIN AND RED'S MEADOWS, CALIF: Road closed.
LAKE TAHOE:
Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbons Charters (530-544-6552) reported:
- The fishing report is about the same as last week:
North Shore:
- Fishing is good with some limits of Mackinaw Trout.
- The Macks are running 2-6 pounds, with the largest, 7-13 pounds.
- We have been trolling at Cal Neva and Dollar Points, 80-200 feet deep, with Dodgers and minnows or Trophy Stick lures.
West Shore:
- The Eagle Point area is producing some Brown Trout, up to 4 pounds, for topliners in boats. They are catching 1-3 fish per day, nothing big.
East Shore:
- Shore fishing at Cave Rock Landing has been slow, except for an occasional planter Rainbow or an occasional, small Mackinaw.
- Boaters need to go deeper for limits of Mackinaw at Cave Rock Shelf.
- Topliners are catching some small Rainbows and an occasional Brown.
TRUCKEE RIVER, NEV:
The Reno Fly Shop in Reno (775-825-FISH) reported:
- The river is flowing at 50 CFS in the town of Truckee Ca, 214 CFS at Farad and 203 CFS in Reno.
- The water temperatures are low this time of year and therefore the fish are fairly lethargic. In spite of that, winter fishing can produce some great fish, and has proven to be case from recent days spent on the stream.
- Typically, this time of year the fishing is best from the inflow at Boca down through Reno.
- Try: Golden Stones, Hares Ears, Copper Johns, Baetis, Tungsten Swing Nymphs, Pheasant Tails, Birds Nests and Prince Nymphs fished on a floating line under an indicator.
- Slow swinging or slow stripping streamers through deep runs also produces some nice fish this time of year, try: McCunes Bandit Leeches, McCunes Sculpin, and Stanley Streamers.
TWIN LAKES, CALIF: Closed.
VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Closed.
WALKER LAKE, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife reported:
- All launching is very poor right now. Launch at your own risk.
EAST WALKER RIVER, NEV:
The Reno Fly Shop in Reno (775-825-FISH) reported:
- Flows are at 23 CFS, which is typical for this time of year. The flows should be between 15 and 50 CFS all winter.
- The fishing remains pretty good.
- As the water gets lower a much more stealthy approach is a must.
- Nymphing with size 18 - 22 nymphs fished either short line style or under an indicator is the way to go.
- Hopper dropper set-ups will work but most of the big dries are gone for the season.
- The overnight lows in the Bridgeport area are expected to be really cold over the next week or so. Coupled with the low flows, anchor ice could be a problem. Afternoons are probably the only time to fish the East Walker over the next few weeks. Keep an eye on the flows and weather over the next month or so.
- Flies to try are any small Baetis patterns and Midges. Look for the occasional Baetis hatch mid day, especially if there is some cloud cover.
WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
West Walker River: Closed.
East Walker River: Closed except from Bridgeport Dam downstream to the Nevada state line and that section has special fishing restrictions.
WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) reported:
East Walker River:
- Water flow is 23 CFS.
- No change here. Midge Pupa and small Pheasant Tails have been productive.
WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken's Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707):
Hunewill Pond:
- The pond is frozen now, probably until sometime in March.
I'll start checking in early March and let you know when it thaws!
