UNR vs. St Mary's game rescheduledThe University of Nevada baseball game against St. Mary's scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peccole Park has been postponed. The game was postponed due to expected snow showers. The game has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. April 13 at Peccole Park. Nevada will next play at 2 p.m. Friday at Cal State Bakersfield. The postponement of Wednesday's game will delay the homecoming of Carson High graduate Gabe Zappin, who is an assistant coach for St. Mary's. Zappin is in his fifth year as an assistant for head coach Jed Soto at St. Mary's and is now is the Associate Head Coach under Soto. Zappin came with Soto to St. Mary's from Feather River Community College where he served as Soto's top assistant for six years. Zappin works as with the Gaels as an infield coach and hitting instructor. He had also been instrumental in producing strong recruiting classes for the Gaels, bringing in top prospects from California and many surrounding states. Zappin's role on the field is instruction of infield play, hitting, and as third base coach. While serving under Soto at Feather River, Zappin assisted in sending more than 35 players to the four-year level and assisted the Eagles in reaching the California Final Four. Several of Zappin's recruits were drafted, including Humberto Gonzales, picked up by the New York Mets in 2003. While at Feather River, Zappin also served three years as an associate scout in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Zappin began his collegiate career in 1994 at De Anza College as a third baseman and pitcher under head coach Tom Kunis, who is now the pitching coach at Stanford. Zappin then played for San Francisco City College during his sophomore year. As a student athlete at San Francisco, Zappin was a First Team All-Conference selection in the Bay Valley North conference. Zappin played his third year at the University of Nevada. At Nevada, he served as a closer and spot starter for coach Gary Powers. He posted a 3-1 record with five saves and helped the Wolf Pack advance to the NCAA Tournament. Zappin played his senior year at Cal State Northridge to finish his collegiate career. His prep career was at CHS, where he led the Senators to the NIAA 3A state championship in 1992. Feiner out for a while
Former Western Nevada College star Travis Feiner has been struggling with a left quad injury and UNLV has decided to have Feiner shut it down for a while. Feiner, a junior for UNLV, has been bothered by the injury since prior to the beginning of the season. Despite the injury, Feiner was able to play in seven of UNLV's 14 games. Feiner started all seven games for UNLV (10-4) and hit .385 (10-for-26) with two home runs, six RBI and nine runs. Feiner hopes to return for UNLV's Mountain West Conference opening series at BYU on March 25. Feiner definitely wants to be back for UNLV's showdown with Nevada at Peccole Park on March 30 in which Feiner would go up against former WNC teammate Brian Barnett, who plays for the Wolf Pack. |
