Hopefully players from the Western Nevada College baseball team won't check the calendar.

WNC has traditionally been a slow starting team over the years, beginning the year at 2-6, 2-7 and 2-6 in the last three seasons. But after a doubleheader sweep of Arizona Western Community College in Las Vegas on Saturday, the Wildcats now have a five-game winning streak and have improved to 7-2 on the season.

Despite walking 11 batters, WNC was able to win the opener 8-5 and then behind the dominant pitching of Jeremy Gendlek, won the nightcap 10-1. "Maybe they're confused and they think it's April," said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore about his players.

"We've got a good feeling at the right right now. We have an expectation of winning. The guys are feeling good. We're pitching when we need to pitch and we're hitting when we need to hit."

Gendlek pitched five shutout innings, allowing five hits, one walk and striking out five. Whittemore said the boxscore won't show how dominant Gendlek was as Whittemore estimated that Gendlek broke seven bats.

Of the five hits that Gendlek allowed, three were broken bat singles, one was a bunt single and one was a legitimate hit, a double. Gendlek went only five innings because it's likely he'll have to pitch on short rest with a five-game road trip coming up in Southern California, beginning on Tuesday against Cuesta (Calif.) Community College in Riverside.

Chris Marangon pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing no runs and no hits. Jeff Barto pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Riley Bevill allowed one earned run after a passed ball and a two-out single while striking out one in the ninth.

WNC took a 5-0 lead in the second.when Jonathan Sigado hit a three-run triple and Jay Skilton added a two-run single. In the fourth, Sigado doubled, went to third on Trevor Goff's sacrifice bunt and scored on Skilton's squeeze bunt.

In the fifth, Kyle Conwell doubled and scored on Garcia's single to make it 7-0. In the seventh, Kevin Taylor and Eric Maupin each had RBI singles to give WNC a 9-0 lead.

Skilton went 3-for-3, Garcia was 2-for-4, Sigado and Conwell were each 2-for-5, Sean Dwyer went 1-for-1 and Brooks Klein added a hit for WNC.

Despite walking six batters in the opener, Jay Waardenburg allowed just one run in four innings. The run came on the only hit Waardenburg allowed, a two-strike bloop single. Waardenburg also struck out six.

Tim Peterson allowed three runs on three hits while walking three in four innings. Dyllon Nuernberg allowed an unearned run in the ninth after walking two and striking out two.

Garcia had a two-run single in the first and a two-run triple in the eighth that gave the Wildcas an 8-2 lead. Skilton went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Klein and Conwell both went 2-for-5 with a double, Garcia was 2-for-4 with four RBI, Sigado went 2-for-3 and Taylor, Pat McMeel and Goff all added a hit for WNC.

The Wildcats will finish their series with Arizona Western on Sunday in Las Vegas.
