Like just about any game between these rival schools, the Carson-Douglas freshman boys basketball team was a closely contested affair on Wednesday night.

Members of the Carson High freshman boys basketball team include (front row, left to right) Michael Bass, Lloyd Daniels, Charlie Banfield, Rafe King, Jake Trapp, Bruce McIntosh, (second row) coach Conrad Burt, Sage Smith, Zac Hudson, Jacob McClelland, Casey Wolfe, head coach Jim Bean, (back row) Ethan Spence and Javier Garcia.

In this case, a fourth-quarter surge was the difference as Carson pulled out a 36-30 victory against Douglas in the State Farm Holiday Classic frosh boys consolation final played at Damonte Ranch High in Reno. Douglas held a 13-10 lead at halftime and the two teams were tied 23-23 at the end of three quarters.

Carson (8-1) rebounded from an opening round loss against unbeaten McQueen and won three straight games to secure the consolation prize.

Michael Bass scored 11 points and Rafe King 6 points to lead the Senators offensively. Charlie Banfield was also selected to the all-tournament team afterward.

"We thought that Charlie Banfield played with a lot of heart and emotion," coach Jim Bean said. "He played like an MVP tonight. If it wasn't for him inspiring other players we would have lost."
