Senators open Sierra League girls golf season on winning note PDF Print E-mail

This may have only been the season opening match, but the Carson High girls golf team demonstrated on Tuesday afternoon that its ultimate season goal is within reach.

Elayna Shine shot 87 and all four scoring players broke 100 as the Senators won their season-opening Sierra League tournament at Thunder Canyon Ranch Golf Course in Washoe Valley. Carson shot 379 to outdistance defending league and Northern 4A Region champion Bishop Manogue, which finished with a 395 total, and Galena at 410.

After exchanging first-half goals, the Carson and Reno high school girls soccer teams settled for a 1-1 tie in their season opening match on Tuesday night on the Huskies' Foster Field.

Blake Sly opened his Northern 4A boys tennis season with a bang on Tuesday afternoon.

Not only did the Carson High junior win all three of his singles matches, he dispatched 2009 regional tournament finalist Joe Saarem 6-3 during the season opener in Reno. McQueen emerged as an 11-7 winner in the team score, but Sly certainly gave the Senators something to cheer about.

With a combination of veteran players and newcomers, not to mention some pretty good athleticism mixed in, this figures to be an interesting season for the Carson High girls tennis team.

So while the Senators dropped their season-opening match at home on Tuesday afternoon against McQueen, 11-7, coach Diane Baker-Roberts emphasized that she expects this team's best days are still to come.
