Here are a couple of numbers to ponder when looking ahead to the Western Nevada College baseball team's 2011 season. For one, the Wildcats only have seven returning veterans and their roster coming into the fall includes 22 freshmen.

Not to worry. They have no intentions of dropping off their 2010 numbers -- 43-17, and second-place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference -- if you ask returning catchers Pat McMeel and Sean Dwyer.

Chalk it up as a successful season opening for the Carson High volleyball team.

Carson won five of six matches and finished fifth in the Gold Division at the Las Vegas Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Senators defeated five straight opponents before losing to eventual champion Douglas in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Las Vegas High School.

It's no secret that Dylan Sawyers is an explosive weapon for the Carson High football team. The junior showed that -- and more -- with a versatile performance on both sides of the ball in Carson's 31-10 season-opening win at home against Del Campo on Friday night.
