It didn't matter to the Carson High football team that the opposition was one of the Sacramento area's top teams. The Senators had an answer -- on more than one occasion -- and came away with an impressive 31-10 season opening victory at home against Del Campo on Friday night.

Dylan Sawyers scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns, the first of which he set up with a 78-yard kickoff return, the second a game-breaking 55-yard run as the Senators (1-0) turned back a Del Campo (Fair Oaks, Calif.) team that went 13-1 in 2009 and came to town listed No. 8 in the Sacramento area's preseason rankings.

A new-look Western Nevada College baseball team will open its fall schedule on Saturday and Sunday when the Wildcats face the Reno Muckdogs and Utah Baseball Academy in scrimmages at John L. Harvey Field.

Coming off one of the best seasons in school history -- the Senators went 9-3 overall with a Sierra League co-championship and advanced to the Northern 4A playoff semifinals -- the Senators are now looking to build on that success.
